“This opportunity would enhance students’ understanding and application of scientific theories. They are the first group of students in that region with access to such a unique opportunity.” – Abdirahman Hassan

MDO provides state-of-the-art equipment such as computer labs, instructional materials, and high-quality textbooks to enhance the knowledge, skills, and employability of youth and community members in the Makhir regions (Sanaag and Haylaan). MDO partners with local schools and educational institutions such as Somali National University (SNU) in Badhan, Sanaag.

The Makhir Diaspora Organization’s (MDO) Economic Development Committee has been instrumental in organizing community efforts to establish a state-of-the-art computer lab at the Somali National University (SNU). This initiative successfully raised nearly $42,000 to build and equip the lab, which now boasts 40 brand new HP computers, adjustable desktop stands, and multifunctional printing devices, including an HP LaserJet all-in-one printer and an IR Canon multipurpose machine (See the full report).

PhET Interactive Simulation

In addition to the computer lab, MDO has facilitated access to the PhET interactive simulation lab from the University of Colorado. This virtual lab offers extensive chemistry, physics, and biology experiments, enhancing the learning experience for SNU students by allowing them to perform virtual experiments and better understand scientific theories. This resource, used by over 1.1 billion users globally, is now integrated into the science curriculum at SNU.

Medical Equipment

Further supporting educational development, MDO has supplied the university with essential medical equipment, such as pulse oximeters, thermometers, glucometers, and blood pressure cuffs. Nursing students use these tools to conduct health screenings for the local community, providing practical training and improving public health. Plans are underway to expand the nursing program with additional laboratory and surgical equipment, manikins for clinical skills training, and hospital beds, aiming to enhance the training and increase the number of nursing graduates from SNU Badhan.

By equipping Somali National University (SNU) in Badhan with state-of-the-art computer labs, interactive simulation tools, and essential medical equipment, MDO enhances the educational experience, practical skills, and employability of students. These resources enable students to gain hands-on experience with modern technology, deepen their understanding of scientific theories through virtual labs, and develop practical nursing skills through community health screenings.
