Good Governance

Local Governance and Development

The Makhir Diaspora Organization (MDO) periodically convenes virtual meetings that bring together the elected mayors from all districts within the Makhir regions. These meetings serve as a platform to address common issues, outline strategic priorities, and foster collaboration aimed at promoting sustainable security and economic development.

MDO’s overarching goal is to establish a foundation of good governance, transparency, and inclusive political process. Through these meetings, mayors are able to:

  • disseminate crucial information to their constituents
  • engage in resource mobilization, and
  • coordinate efforts to address community needs effectively.

A recent case of MDO’s impactful initiatives includes the successful resolution of a land ownership issue, enabling the Badhan City Council to acquire a site for constructing a new local market. The acquisition and development costs were covered through a grant from Islamic Relief. This resolution not only addresses a critical community need but also exemplifies MDO’s commitment to facilitating local development projects that drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents.

Looking ahead, MDO aims to continue fostering a collaborative environment among the mayors, district councils, and planning committees, ensuring that the voices of all Somali citizens in Makhir regions are heard and that key economic resources are developed, managed, and utilized efficiently to deliver basic services.

By prioritizing issues such as the administration of property taxes and customs duties, MDO strives to create a more prosperous and secure future for the Makhir region.
